Jak’s Life 2.0

I <3 Apple In-Store Support

Posted in Apple, Life, Technology, mac os x, software by jak on February 24th, 2008

Today I brought my Mighty Mouse with me to the Apple store because despite the tons of suggested remedies to solve the problem with dirt in the track ball on the Mighty Mouse I gave up just short of taking the mouse apart to clean out the sensors. After the genius OKed it with his manager he was able to go ahead and give me a brand new mouse! I must say it’s weird to be able to scroll down after months of not being able to. All I’ve got to say is that today was another great experience with an Apple genius - The End.

Back to Opera

Posted in Life, design, mac os x, software by jak on February 23rd, 2008

As many of you may know I took a hiatus from using Opera as some websites just flat out didn’t work well in Opera so when I realized that I hadn’t tried Flock again since it’d left beta I’d give it another shot. At first I loved it, then I slowly started to hate it. Youtube, WordPress, and Flickr the three sites I use a lot were all very slow and worthless in Flock not to mention that it even managed to slow down the already slow Facebook (which I live on).

So in an attempt to find another browser I decided I’d go back to Opera after all I missed speed dial…a lot and no plugin I found could match the one native to Opera

At this point I’m using both Safari and Opera interchangeably I use Safari for sites that Opera doesn’t render correctly and I may be using Safari for new WordPress posts as Opera has a bug when you start a new paragraph on WordPress’ software it doesn’t start a new line automatically which then throws the CSS coding off and your text runs into the rest of the page.

Posted in Apple, Life, Technology, Updates, mac os x, software by jak on November 15th, 2007

Weighing in at 109MB, this looks to be a fairly significant update. Wow, it didn’t take long for the first update but I suppose that’s a good thing, Apple cares!

Some Sweet Leopard Docks

Posted in Apple, Digg, Technology, design, fun, mac os x, software by jak on November 6th, 2007

You know you want your dock to look like this, read on to find out how.

From a site that I find to have a rather funny and very creative domain name, yellatducks.com I found a great list of Docks for Leopard. The site is absolutley worth taking a look at and maybe even trying some of these fancy docks, it is pretty easy as long as you follow dirrections, right now I’m actually using the wood dock (found on another site though). But this is by far the most comprehensive list of custom docks for Leopard.

Opera - The Browser

Posted in Life, mac os x, software by jak on October 11th, 2007

Today I just realized that I switched browsers a few days ago and never told anyone about it, so now I am. I switched to Opera earlier this week because I was getting sick of Firefox’s performance issues on my computer. I had previously tried Opera and did not like it’s lack of customizable features but I figured why not, lets try Opera again. This time around I was amazed, the browser was clean looking on OS X and the tabs from what I remember have been redesigned. I was also amazed by how easy it is to change the theme of the browser without restarting the software. The next awesome thing that I found was “speed dial” when you open a new blank tab it presents you with a bunch of little windows that you can put some of your most visited sites in and see a live preview of them (only if you enable them to reload automatically). The last thing that’s not new to Opera is that it remembers your last browsing session and opens it automatically for you to to start browsing from where you left off. I believe that Opera is worth checking out if you even have the slightest thought of switching browsers, it’s available for all major operating systems. A link is below as part of the banner

30 Secret Photoshop Shortcuts

Posted in Digg, design, mac os x, photography, photoshop, software by jak on September 10th, 2007

It is proven that by using software shortcuts can boost up productivity. Here are 30 secret Photoshop shortcuts that I’ve learned from years of experience. Well, what I mean by “secret” is that these shortcuts are not documented in the menus. Bet you don’t know them all! This is a great list and it really does help, best part for me is that the shortcuts are all mac friendly :). But as a rule of thumb where you see cmd it’s usually substitutable with ctrl. As a little side note too, the pictures on the site are extremely helpful and very well done I am a fan of the illustrations, they make the post so much easier to read.

How To Run a Tor Server: Donate bandwidth to the Tor Network

Posted in Digg, Technology, software by jak on September 1st, 2007

If you’re not familiar with the Tor network: it basically provides layers of encryption and anonymity that can help ensure your privacy. However, a common complaint is that the servers are slow. Therefore, if you can, follow these instructions (for Ubuntu) and donate some of your own bandwidth, or at least Digg this to help anonymity online. Donating some bandwidth would be great (maybe only at night?) I would do this provided I was running Ubuntu.
