I <3 Apple In-Store Support

Posted in Apple, Life, Technology, mac os x, software by jak on February 24th, 2008

Today I brought my Mighty Mouse with me to the Apple store because despite the tons of suggested remedies to solve the problem with dirt in the track ball on the Mighty Mouse I gave up just short of taking the mouse apart to clean out the sensors. After the genius OKed it with his manager he was able to go ahead and give me a brand new mouse! I must say it’s weird to be able to scroll down after months of not being able to. All I’ve got to say is that today was another great experience with an Apple genius - The End.

I Hate Optimum Customer Service

Posted in Life, Local, Technology by jak on February 24th, 2008

While I’m sitting on hold for only the first time with Optimum Online customer support I figured I might as well write a rant about how much I hate thier custotmer support. To start off you get a fairly sarcastic sounding recording that uses a really annoying repetative tone and as it goes through the options when you’re waiting for the option for technical support and then you realize maybe after the second or third round…it’s not coming. So this forces you to hit 0 which will put you on hold. At this point you hear terrible music the same recording about Optimum Rewards over and over. After that torture you get a general operator who will take down all your information, try to get you to upgrade your service, then transfer you. After this you finally get to a tech support person who is usually very helpful but will take down your information again and it’s just a flat out hassle to get to them. Except you still need to wait at least 20-30 minutes for someone to help.

Facebook Invitations - The New Spam

Posted in Life, Technology, friends, fun, web 2.0 by jak on February 21st, 2008

While I was reading Mrod’s blog I came across his rant about Facebook and their application invites. In my opinion the application invites are the worst thing that Facebook could have ever implemented, how were applications not going to abuse it when it’s so easy to do? They’re not. At this point I think it’s time for Facebook to go on damage control and allow users to turn off the ability to be invited to applications by blocking them or by some other means.

Facebook needs to do something about this, the end.

Canon EOS XSi

Posted in Technology, Updates, friends, photography by jak on February 16th, 2008

Apparently in April Canon is releasing their update to their entry level SLR camera bodies with the XSi which adds a new image sensor, bigger screen, and live view. As far as I know (and I’m probably going to be corrected on this) the XSi will be the second major camera from a large company to feature an SLR camera with live view. But as an aspiring photographer I’m almost thinking I’d rather not have a live view, I’ve always been a fan of viewfinders, even on most point and shoot cameras.

Edit: Here’s a link to Canon’s site with details about the camera.

My Work

Posted in Life, Local, Technology, design, fun, web 2.0 by jak on December 20th, 2007

For the past several weeks I’ve been working with my local library in creating a website geared towards the children’s services department. Below is a screen shot I took of the site if you’d like to see the code for it let me know by leaving me a comment.

The site was built on CSS-Tricks’ “Perfect Fluid Layout.” Which was worked great for me and I highly recommend it. I am looking for some design advice so anything you’ve got to offer me I’d love to hear and once again, if you want the code let me know in a comment!

Ultimate Ears Headphones

Posted in Life, Technology, fun, music by jak on December 15th, 2007

Last week when I was in Florida I went over to downtown Disney with my dad and into the Virgin Records store. As we were leaving I saw a table with two women that were letting people try out their headphones and enter a contest to win them. So today I found a package that I knew I didn’t order sitting out on my front steps. Inside that box was a short and to the point letter congratulating me on winning a pair of Ultimate Ears’ Super.fi 5Pro. I’ll be the first to tell you this, these are amazing headphones, if you’ve got the money go get yourself a pair the sound is incomparable to any other headphones I’ve ever heard.

I’ll tell you these headphones are making me enjoy my iPod even more than I already did.

Nobody’s perfect and that includes Steve Jobs. This clip I found on Digg highlight some of the bloopers in Macworld.

Posted in Apple, Life, Technology, Updates, mac os x, software by jak on November 15th, 2007

Weighing in at 109MB, this looks to be a fairly significant update. Wow, it didn’t take long for the first update but I suppose that’s a good thing, Apple cares!

Some Sweet Leopard Docks

Posted in Apple, Digg, Technology, design, fun, mac os x, software by jak on November 6th, 2007

You know you want your dock to look like this, read on to find out how.

From a site that I find to have a rather funny and very creative domain name, yellatducks.com I found a great list of Docks for Leopard. The site is absolutley worth taking a look at and maybe even trying some of these fancy docks, it is pretty easy as long as you follow dirrections, right now I’m actually using the wood dock (found on another site though). But this is by far the most comprehensive list of custom docks for Leopard.

The Digg effect? Government regulators backing off of CNN Linux “hero”.

Posted in Digg, Technology by jak on October 4th, 2007

James Burgett, the self-proclaimed “fat tattooed freak” who has was dugg for donating 16,000 Ubuntu boxes & was then threatened with fines by Calif. toxic regulators, has posted a new blog entry saying that there is only one issue remaining: tracking distribution of his “e-waste.” Oh, and the EFF has offered to help him out. Go Diggers! This is the power of Digg and comunity, when someone is in big trouble we’re all there for each other. That’s what I love about the Digg community.
