Facebook Invitations - The New Spam

Posted in Life, Technology, friends, fun, web 2.0 by jak on February 21st, 2008

While I was reading Mrod’s blog I came across his rant about Facebook and their application invites. In my opinion the application invites are the worst thing that Facebook could have ever implemented, how were applications not going to abuse it when it’s so easy to do? They’re not. At this point I think it’s time for Facebook to go on damage control and allow users to turn off the ability to be invited to applications by blocking them or by some other means.

Facebook needs to do something about this, the end.

My Work

Posted in Life, Local, Technology, design, fun, web 2.0 by jak on December 20th, 2007

For the past several weeks I’ve been working with my local library in creating a website geared towards the children’s services department. Below is a screen shot I took of the site if you’d like to see the code for it let me know by leaving me a comment.

The site was built on CSS-Tricks’ “Perfect Fluid Layout.” Which was worked great for me and I highly recommend it. I am looking for some design advice so anything you’ve got to offer me I’d love to hear and once again, if you want the code let me know in a comment!

The new Facebook [Fan] Pages - Join The Digg Page Now

Posted in Digg, Life, web 2.0 by jak on November 7th, 2007

“Represent your business, band, product and more by creating a distinct and customized profile.” More information on FB Pages (a new type of profile page) can be found at facebook.com/ads. Join the Digg group and spread the word to your news feed!

Ok is it just me or is Facebook getting too popular, slow, and now WAY too much like myspace? I’m fearing the way that Facebook is going right now. I’m afraid that Facebook is going to end up just like myspace, pretty crappy. Although I do like the way that Facebook is finding to make money, hopefully it’ll get them some new servers, they’re going to need it!

New Facebook Features

Posted in Life, web 2.0 by jak on October 10th, 2007

Tonight I noticed that Facebook added a “Make Profile Image” option to albums on Facebook (see picture below). I’m not sure if this is an entirely new feature but it surely is a cool new(er) feature to facebook. You probably want to check out the full size version of this (click the picture) because I needed to resize this significantly to fit inside my theme.

Update: A catch that I just picked up on is that you MUST be tagged by the owner of the photo in order for the make
profile image option to appear which makes sense to me.

This is a list that I think will come into use a lot when I being coding for my school’s ITLA project again this year. It’s a great list and I give a lot of credit and thanks to Vandelay Website Designs for compiling this list and making it available. This certainly will be bookmarked for future reference. You can check out this great list at their website.

SimpleWeather.com

Posted in Updates, design, web 2.0 by jak on September 10th, 2007

If you haven’t seen Time’s top 100 websites you should check out the list but from that list comes an awesome website, SimpleWeather.com. The site uses weather.com’s data to make a nice easy to read screen without clutter and without ads. Today when the site automatically refreshed I was greeted with a new logo and once I re-entered my zip code a brand new details screen where there are now ads but there is an extended forecast feature as well (it used to only span 3 days). Personally I am a fan of the new design with the exception of the ad but it is non-intrusive so I guess it’s not that bad. To read more about the changes check out the Simple Weather’s Blog post about the new site. To learn more about the site check it out as well as read the blog.

Facebook is Getting Slow

Posted in Life, web 2.0 by jak on September 10th, 2007

Recently I’ve been having a large number of problems accessing Facebook and using it. It often takes very long to load a page and nearly every other page I’ve gotten a page reset message. So what’s going on with Facebook, don’t tell me this is going to be a repeat of Myspace. The only thing is I’m not sure if this is just my computer even though I don’t have problems with other web pages there may be a local problem or something weird with my browser so I just want to ask, does anyone else have these problems?

Apple Computers Lose ENERGY STAR Certification

Posted in Apple, Digg, Updates, web 2.0 by jak on July 28th, 2007

On July 20th, energy star’s new specifications for computers went into effect. Apple currently does not have one computer that meets the new requirements. Wow too bad my favorite computer company lost their energy star rating. I hope that they will work quickly in the coming months to get that rating back. Use the “read more” link below to read the full article.
